DJ Elmoe, recognized for his standout track in Planet Mu's 2010 compilation, blends experimental elements in footwork music. His recent album, 'Battle Zone,' is a compilation that showcases his innovative approach, incorporating varied tempos and otherworldly samples. Unlike typical footwork, which often adheres to a strict tempo, Elmoe's tracks reflect a greater musical breadth, influenced by his previous experiences as a percussionist. This combination has established him as a key figure in reinterpreting the genre beyond its Chicago roots.
"I don't make my tracks for people to just dance off to, I make tracks that you can listen to forever," said Elmoe (aka Johnathan Tapp) in an interview in 2019.
For the duration of the record, Battle Zone operates firmly within its own mutated definition of footwork, exploring a range of fast-paced tempos instead of sticking to the genre's standardized 160 BPM.
