Alvin Lucier, an influential composer known for his unique exploration of sound, has his musical legacy extended through an innovative project in Australia. Following his death in 2021, artists and scientists developed a "brain on a dish" using stem cells derived from Lucier’s blood samples. This living neural cluster, displayed in the Revivification installation, interfaces with specially designed brass plates to create new musical compositions. The project honors Lucier's visionary understanding of his work’s potential to transcend death, blending art and neuroscience.
"We have developed a brain on a dish, more or less, that has the ability to take action in the real world," said artist Nathan Thompson.
"He was aware of possibilities that the work would perform for him even after his death," Thompson said.
The blobs are a cluster of neurons that mimic in a very basic way the structure and development of a human brain.
Lucier's posthumous composition comes from a new installation at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth called Revivification.
