"For just over 50 years, guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (ironically the one without a beard) played the kind of biker beloved bar room blues rock that doesn't equal mainstream stardom. For them, it did. The only explanation that makes sense is that they were just that good at it. ZZ Top were the odd men out, and yet also oddly perfect for the nascent, new wave and pop obsessed MTV."
"In 2021 Hill passed away after they set the Guinness Book record for longest active run with no line-up changes. According to his wishes, longtime ZZ Top guitar tech, Elwood Francis, stepped in, and the show goes on."
"Sun, Nov 9, 8pm, $225 Guild Theatre, Menlo Park"
Guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard performed a biker-beloved bar-room blues-rock style for just over 50 years. Their raw, blues-based sound achieved mainstream success and fit surprisingly well with early MTV's new wave and pop aesthetics. The band set a Guinness Book record for the longest active run with no lineup changes. Dusty Hill died in 2021, and per his wishes longtime ZZ Top guitar tech Elwood Francis joined the band. The group continues to perform and a show is scheduled Sun, Nov 9, 8pm at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park for $225.
