"Deep Water composer Miller is the co-coordinator of PSU's Sonic Arts and Music Production program. Miller sat at a table in the front row during the performance, operating Ableton from a laptop and running a video camera. These electronic elements added a new dimension to the chamber opera, using synthesized sounds and manipulated field recordings to evoke a cold, post-human world."
""a post-apocalyptic fantasy opera that investigates rage, grief, play, & persistence in the face of gargantuan, destructive forces. Queer teenage companions Val & Bluejay chronicle the fall of humanity during the Anthropocene, acting as witnesses and documentarians and finding resilience through love and play. Deep Water positions 2 queer teenagers in the role of history-creation, defining what is worth preserving.""
New Wave Opera performed at Lincoln Recital Hall at Portland State University with founders and sopranos Lisa Neher and Lindsey Rae Johnson, tenor Brandon Michael, and pianist Stephen Lewis. The program included preview excerpts from Caroline Louise Miller's opera Deep Water alongside works by Neher, Missy Mazzoli, Drew Swatosh, and Gregory Spears. The concert was part of PSU's Music@Midday series and filled Lincoln Hall with students, faculty, and community members. Composer Caroline Louise Miller operated Ableton and a camera during the performance, adding synthesized sounds and manipulated field recordings. Deep Water uses electronic textures to evoke a cold, post-human world and centers two queer teenagers confronting the Anthropocene.
