“White Flag” presents Vince Staples addressing nonstop fighting in wars, police brutality, and pervasive inequality affecting Black Americans. The accompanying music video, co-directed by Staples and Bradley J. Calder, shows a giant American flag painted white, hung between two pillars, and shot dozens of times with an assault rifle. The single is the second from Cry Baby, which is scheduled for release June 5 on Loma Vista and marks Staples’ debut on the label. “White Flag” is the second track to receive a gun-related visual, following “Blackberry Marmalade,” which uses a first-person shooter-style video. Cry Baby features largely live instrumentation, creating rock and jazz arrangement textures.
