"Are hip-hop classics the new jazz standards? Drummer and electronic alchemist Kassa Overall stirred the scene when he recast '90s rap like Busta Rhymes and A Tribe Called Quest into bold, acoustic arrangements. His electrifying set of covers (original artists noted below) honors the 30th anniversary of New York City's The Jazz Gallery, the room where this performance comes alive."
Toast of the Nation rings in the New Year with world-class live performances from across the globe. Performers include Nicole Zuraitis in Las Vegas, Kassa Overall in New York, Sofia Rei on an island in Croatia, Marshall Allen in Philadelphia, Kokayi in Knoxville, Amir ElSaffar in Berlin, and the late Jack DeJohnette in New York. Nicole Zuraitis blends original songs, reimagined Dolly Parton and Fleetwood Mac tunes, and standards at Vic's Supper Club with a band featuring Tom Scott and Keyon Harrold. Kassa Overall transforms '90s hip-hop into bold acoustic jazz arrangements to honor The Jazz Gallery's 30th anniversary. The program highlights genre-crossing reinterpretations and historic live venues.
