"Inside the club, which is at the centre of the former fishing community around Newcastle upon Tyne, something else is brewing. When the Guardian visits, members are playing lunchtime games of pool in the downstairs bar as usual. But upstairs there are still signs of the latest party as huge sound system speakers butt up against the bingo caller's equipment."
"This working men's club has become an unlikely clubbing mecca. Local promoter and artist Man Power (real name Geoff Kirkwood) has brought some of the world's best DJs and dance music acts to King Street: Caribou, Daniel Avery, Luke Una, Roman Flugel, Prosumer, Optimo and Gerd Janson have all played on the club's stage and sung its praises. Geoff Kirkwood, better known as Man Power, has been putting on events at King Street, in which he owns a stake, since 2022."
King Street Social Club sits on a North Shields street with a tiled exterior and red sign, anchoring a former fishing community near Newcastle upon Tyne. The club retains working men's features such as a downstairs bar with pool and bingo equipment while the upstairs concert hall is occasionally transformed into a nightclub. Promoter and artist Geoff Kirkwood (Man Power) owns a stake and runs Are You Affiliated, subletting the concert space for the next decade to stage events. International DJs including Caribou, Daniel Avery, Roman Flugel, Prosumer, Optimo and Gerd Janson have performed. Events have sold out, bar takings have risen, and the project initially lost money.
