"It turns out The X-Files is easily adapted from your favorite '90s paranormal TV adventures into a super silly on-stage sketch show. Kickstand Comedy's fully improvised performance keeps all of your favorite tropes: the will-they-won't-they love story, the monster of the week format, and the runaway conspiracy theories. Starring comedians Tessa Waring and Mo Merrill as Scully and Mulder, expect high sexual tension, audience suggestions, and jump scares even the performers don't know are coming."
"You know when you just know about a band? Their world-building reaches somewhere inside you, pulling out a lifetime of emotions you forgot you had. James, Eric, and Pete, the trio comprising Portland's Nonbinary Girlfriend, do just that on their new album IM NOT PRETTY. Almost as if reading from James' diary, the songs potently dispel feelings of isolation, replacing them with enlightened understandings of self and community."
Kickstand Comedy stages a fully improvised X-Files parody starring Tessa Waring and Mo Merrill as Scully and Mulder, using will-they-won't-they romance, monster-of-the-week structure, runaway conspiracy theories, audience suggestions, and surprise jump scares. Portland trio Nonbinary Girlfriend — James, Eric, and Pete — release the album IM NOT PRETTY, with songs that transform isolation into deeper understandings of self and community through intimate, diary-like lyrics. The IM NOT PRETTY release is at Coffin Club on Friday the 13th with Myriads and Femme Cell, and a separate all-ages release is scheduled at Misplaced Screen Printing on February 15. The Off Beat venue opens after Friends of Noise repurposed the former Dancin' Bare strip club space in Kenton.
