Spotify partners with record labels to create 'artist-first' AI music products | TechCrunch
"Spotify on Thursday announced a series of deals with major record labels to develop new AI products designed ensure fair compensation and center artists and songwriters in the experience. In partnership with Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin, the streamer said it would develop "responsible AI" products that respect copyright, but also allow the artists to choose whether or not they want to allow the use of AI tools."
"Spotify was recently criticized for allowing an AI-generated band's music to go viral on its service, raising questions about whether the future of music would push human artistry to the side. Last month, the company revamped its AI policy to cut down on spam, particularly users who upload AI content at mass scale, create duplicates, and manipulate the search and recommendations systems. Spotify also said it would adopt the music labeling system DDEX to label when AI was used as part of the music creation process."
Spotify announced partnerships with Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin to develop AI music products that prioritize fair compensation and give artists control over AI uses of their work. The initiative aims to build 'responsible AI' that respects copyright and enables artists and rightsholders to opt in or out of AI-driven tools. Spotify currently offers generative features like an AI DJ and AI-curated playlists. The company faced criticism after AI-generated music went viral, prompting an AI policy overhaul to reduce spam and manipulation. Spotify plans to adopt DDEX labeling for AI-created music and to enable identification and payment when music is used in AI-generated tracks.
