"I talked to Mike for the May 11 episode of BV Interviews, and our conversation also touched on the '70s inspirations behind Born to Kill, and working with producer Dave Sardy and collaborators Lucinda Williams and Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. We also talk about how beating cancer energized his desire to make even more music, Social Distortion's upcoming tour with The Descendents and The Chats, early Social D documentary Another State of Mind, playing Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise, five records he thinks everyone should own, and more."

Born to Kill is Social Distortion’s first album in 15 years, delayed by Covid and Mike Ness’s tonsil cancer diagnosis and treatment. Ness describes recovering from surgery with tubes, relearning how to eat, speak, and eventually sing, with vocals recorded after treatment. He frames the comeback as energizing, saying he returned singing as if there were no tomorrow. The album is tied to ’70s inspirations and Ness’s reflective, autobiographical approach, with “Born to Kill” presented as a mission statement. Ness also credits producer Dave Sardy and collaborators Lucinda Williams and Benmont Tench. Plans include touring with The Descendents and The Chats, plus appearances and related projects.
