See paintings by iconic Bay Area percussionist Pete Escovedo in Oakland this month
Briefly

Pete Escovedo, a Grammy-award-winning jazz percussionist, is also a talented painter. His artwork dates back to the 1950s. He will turn 90 on July 13 and continues to tour in Europe. Escovedo has between 80 and 100 art pieces, including self-portraits and abstract works. His daughter, Zina Escovedo, collaborates with Oakland artist Eric Murphy to curate The California Art Tour, which includes exhibits in several cities. The opening was significant for Zina, who lives in Oakland, where the family has deep roots.
"Pops started painting at a very young age. It was music and art that were his life. But then, he just wanted to do music, and thank God, because now we have Pete Escovedo winning Grammys and all kinds of awards," said daughter Zina Escovedo.
"Now, I wanted him to focus on his artwork."
Zina Escovedo has been helping curate exhibits for her father's work for years. She said "Pops," as Pete Escovedo is known amongst friends and family, has about 80 to 100 art pieces, some of which have never been seen in public, and some adorn the family's home in Los Angeles.
The Oakland exhibit will showcase new pieces, while the one in San Francisco will feature memorabilia, including Escovedo's Grammy.
