Gwen McCrae, a prominent figure in Miami's music scene, passed away at 81, leaving behind a legacy defined by her 1975 hit "Rockin' Chair." Co-written by Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, the song reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B charts. McCrae's contributions to pop, Black, and tropical music, along with her powerful voice, helped shape the sound of the era, making her an influential figure in the music industry alongside her husband George McCrae at TK Records.
The sexy crossover tune "Rockin' Chair" was written by Miami composers Clarence "Blowfly" Reid and Willie Clarke and it thrust its way up the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart to No. 9 and No. 1 R&B in the summer of 1975.
"Gwen was an amazing singer. She really did help to shape hip-hop and dance music with her energetic soulful voice and Henry Stone's pioneering and visionary contributions to music around the world," Stone said.
