In a region where music has largely been a male domain, Ripple Effect Band challenges conventions as the first all-female band in Maningrida, blending diverse influences and languages in their sound.
Jodie Kell spotted the opportunity for change in Maningrida when she began teaching music at the high school, inspiring young women like Jolene Lawrence and others to pursue their musical talents.
Kell's return in 2017 marked a significant revival for the band. 'There were all these kids and families singing our song together, which was really special,' she reflected on reuniting the band.
The band’s lineup features Indigenous musicians who are not only multi-instrumentalists but also songwriters, conveying rich cultural narratives through a fusion of reggae, blues, and multiple First Nations languages.
