"A viola, to me, is unique, and it has a sound that just warms your heart and gives your heart a hug, give your whole body a hug. There's nothing like the sound of a viola. I don't think there's another instrument that even comes close to it. They can bring on an affectionate emotion."
"I know a gas station is an unusual place for violist. And I can't wait to try it. We did get many responses for guitarists. The guitarist just wasn't what I was looking for. I'm just holding out for a violist."
Harvey Kertzman, a 76-year-old gas station owner on Quincy Avenue, has launched an unconventional initiative to bring live chamber music to his business. After posting signs seeking a violist over 14 months ago and receiving responses primarily from guitarists, he finally found a retired violist willing to perform. Kertzman chose the viola specifically for its unique, warm sound that he believes evokes emotional connection. The musician will begin performances once spring weather arrives. Kertzman continues displaying recruitment signs as backup options while pursuing his vision inspired by classic films he watches with his wife.
