Queer musician Halsey explains why she's 'not allowed' to make a new album
"It would be considered a success for most artists, 100,000 albums in the first week, in an era when we don't sell physical music. But it's a failure in the context of the kind of success I've had previously. And that's the hardest part of having been a pop star once, because I'm not one anymore, and I'm being compared to people that I don't consider lateral to me."
"If I'm being honest with you, the album sold 100,000 f**king copies first week."
"That's a pretty big first week, especially for an artist who hasn't had a hit in a long time."
Halsey is currently not allowed to make another album after her 2024 release, The Great Impersonator, underperformed compared with her earlier commercial peaks. The Great Impersonator debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and sold about 100,000 copies in its first week, a level many artists would consider successful in the streaming era. Halsey contrasts that performance with her Manic-era peak, when "Without Me" reached number one and achieved multi-platinum sales. Halsey describes feeling no longer a pop star and frustrated by comparisons. Her recent For My Last Trick tour sold out quickly, and the upcoming Back to Badlands anniversary tour has a sold-out UK leg.
