Amunaso, a Congolese R&B-soul artist, has released her latest single "Yembela," which seamlessly blends her heritage with contemporary sounds. This single, meaning 'sing' in Lingala, is a profound homage to her cultural background, invoking themes of love and identity. The song evolved from an afro/zouk tempo to a slow-jam, as Amunaso aimed to create an intimate band experience. Inspired by the emotions of dance and love, the track captures her artistic journey and the importance of connection in music, all culminating in a lush, atmospheric soundscape defined by intricate melodies and heartfelt lyrics.
Amunaso reflects on her recording process, emphasising the importance of creating a space to fully embrace the emotions stirred by her music. "I love to record vocals at home. It's where I can take my time and truly connect with what I'm feeling," she explains.
The lyrics of "Yembela" were inspired by a vision of a couple dancing under palm trees by the sea, deeply in love. This imagery unfolded naturally as she hummed along to the initial beat, with Lingala words flowing as a prayer for sacred love. "Everything we do is a form of prayer," Amunaso asserts.
Raised in the Netherlands and flourishing in Brussels, Amunaso's music is a captivating blend of lush melodies and introspective lyrics. With roots that run deep in the Congo, she channels her rich cultural tapestry into every note, exploring themes of love, identity, and spirituality.
Originally born from a tropical afro/zouk vibe, "Yembela" underwent a significant transformation to reach its current form. "I wanted it to be a band experience," Amunaso recalls. With guitarist Nathan's suggestion to switch to a slow-jam drum pattern, the track found its heart and intimacy.
