Peter Gabriel Looks Forward to "What Lies Ahead" on Spiritual New Song
"You see the world now all connected, flowing as a brain. You see the world the way it will be, unfolding in your hands. Gabriel sings these lyrics over the meditative composition, reflecting on interconnectedness and future possibilities."
"I've always liked spiritual, inspirational music because sometimes people get to a different place when they remove themselves and are just present with this feeling of something else out there. Although I'm not religious myself, I definitely have the feeling for it and that's what I was hoping we would have with the choir at the front, that you go straight away into this other world."
"What Lies Ahead is about inventors and invention. My dad was an electrical engineer, inventor and I saw him go through the frustrations of not only trying to realize an idea, which has to normally go through so many iterations, but then to sell it, both to the people who've got the money and then to the outside world."
Peter Gabriel's new single 'What Lies Ahead' is a meditative composition that begins with calming chants and features a string section. The track originated as an instrumental work performed on Gabriel's 'Back to Front' tour over a decade ago. It was built on a melody created by Gabriel's son Isaac and includes contributions from the Scandinavian choir Orphei Drängar, cellist Linnea Olsson, and orchestral arrangements by John Metcalfe. Brian Eno suggested opening with the choir to create a spiritual atmosphere. Gabriel explains the song addresses invention and the creative process, inspired by his father's experiences as an electrical engineer navigating the challenges of realizing and commercializing ideas.
