Patti Scialfa discussed her multiple myeloma diagnosis in 2018, saying, "Touring has become a challenge for me. I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go." Her health has necessitated a reduced presence with the E Street Band, marking a significant change since she first joined in 1984. She explained, "That's the new normal for me right now, and I'm OK with that."
In the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Scialfa reflected on her time away from the band, stating her absence from shows in 2023 and 2024 was largely due to her health. She mentioned, "Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that's been a treat."
