Massa Nera will release their third album The Emptiness of All Things on October 31 via Persistent Vision. The record follows 2022's Derramar | Querer | Borrar, the 2023 remix D//Q//B[2.0], and a split LP with Quiet Fear. Matthew Michel (of NØ MAN/Majority Rule) co-produced, engineered, and mixed the album. The project originated from a commission by the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music's Composing Earth series to create music addressing the climate crisis. Recording proved an exciting and torturous undertaking that was not cathartic. The lead single 'Mechanical Sunrise' blends screamo, dance-punk, and spoken word to critique greenwashing and neoliberal 'green growth.'
This album was a true undertaking, exciting and torturous in equal measure,
It was not cathartic in the least. We hope people feel better listening to it than we did making it... not too much better, though.
'Mechanical Sunrise' is our comment on greenwashing, the neoliberal delusion of 'green growth,' and the increasingly absurd idea that we can innovate our way out of any problem, no matter how seemingly insurmountable said problem might be. The narrator of this song answers our collective despair vis-a-vis the climate crisis with a slick smile and a sales pitch for an EV.
