'Earth, Wind & Fire,' which caps off a cool run of singles over the past few months, is a slow-burner that puts a motivational twist on childhood flashback anthems popular in Southern pain rap. His big, raspy vocals do a lot of the legwork, making the song so catchy that you sort of overlook the sadness. Sean Kingston knew something about that.
Drop ffawty in 2007 and his sweet-sounding islander hip-pop would have had Z100 on lock. It makes sense that he came up mentored by tabloid starboy Sean Kingston (seriously). Naturally, these days ffawty's sound leans to the rap side, pulling from the emotionally bruised singalongs of Broward County's Loe Shimmy as much as the melodies of the West Indies—he's from St. Thomas, one of the largest Virgin Islands.
