Gary Mani Mounfield, founding member and bassist of the Stone Roses, has died aged 63 and the cause of death has not been shared. His brother Greg and other family members posted the news and multiple musicians and labels paid tribute, including Ian Brown, Tim Burgess, Rowetta and Liam Gallagher. Rough Trade Records described him as the perfect example of how a bassist can be the beating heart of a band. Mani had announced a UK speaking tour for September 2026 to June 2027 covering pivotal career moments. His wife Imelda died from cancer in 2023. Mani was born on 16 November 1962 in Crumpsall, attended Xaverian College in Rusholme and left school aged 16. He befriended Ian Brown during a confrontation with National Front skinheads, formed the Fireside Chaps with John Squire and Andy Couzens which evolved into the Stone Roses, and switched from guitar to bass, becoming synonymous with the Rickenbacker.
