German Christmas songs (Weihnachtslieder) have very long traditions, with some originating in the Middle Ages. Several traditional songs are sung every year across the country, especially on Heiligabend (Christmas Eve). Five favourite songs can boost festive mood and expand German vocabulary. Stille Nacht originated in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria; Josef Mohr presented the poem to organist Franz Gruber on December 24, 1818, and they performed it at Christmas mass. The lyrics evoke peace and calm and the carol was sung publicly during both World Wars. Stille Nacht has been translated into more than 300 languages and dialects.
