Born to a Puerto Rican father and a Haitian mother, Gerald Maxwell Rivera suffered the loss of his father at age three, leading him to embrace music and eventually sign with Columbia Records.
Maxwell scored airplay with 'Til the Cops Come Knockin' and 'Ascension (Never Wonder)' from his debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, which went platinum and garnered Grammy nominations.
