Drake's Lawsuit Over 'Not Like Us' Has Been Dismissed
"A federal judge dismissed Drake's defamation-and-harassment lawsuit against his longtime label, Universal Music Group, over Kendrick Lamar's diss track "Not Like Us" on October 9. Drake filed the complaint back in January, arguing that his reputation was harmed because listeners would genuinely believe that he was a "certified pedophile." But in the context of a multi-track feud in which Drake was also leveling incendiary language at Lamar, his case fell flat to judge Jeannette Vargas."
"Vulture has reached out to his representatives, but for now, it's unclear whether he plans to try to strike a chord in federal appeals court. "From the outset, this suit was an affront to all artists and their creative expression and never should have seen the light of day," a spokesperson for UMG states. "We're pleased with the court's dismissal and look forward to continuing our work successfully promoting Drake's music and investing in his career.""
On October 9 a federal judge dismissed Drake's defamation-and-harassment lawsuit against Universal Music Group over "Not Like Us". Drake filed the complaint in January, alleging his reputation was harmed because listeners would believe he was a "certified pedophile". The judge ruled that, given the multi-track feud and incendiary language from both artists, a reasonable listener would not interpret the song as conveying verifiable facts. Drake's legal team may appeal the decision. UMG denied allegations of secret payments and reduced licensing and called the suit an affront to artists while celebrating the dismissal.
