Since the 1960s, Turkish groups have fused Anatolian folk with psychedelic sounds. Pioneers like Mogollar and Erkin Koray electrified traditional instruments, while newer acts such as Baba Zula incorporate modern elements like synths. Derya Yldrm, known for her soulful saz-funk, collaborates with producer Leon Michels on her third album, which features rich acoustics and warm production. Key tracks showcase her powerful vocals and innovative arrangements, marrying traditional Turkish sounds with influences from 60s soul and reggae, exhibiting Yldrm and Grup Simsek's imaginative evolution within the genre.
Opener Cicek Acyor sets the tone with Yldrm's powerful falsetto ascending beautifully over a driving, mid-tempo groove of fuzzing bass and softly piping Mellotron keys.
The rich, oaken tone of Michels' production creates consistency, but when the group break with their constraints on three standards, the record reaches unexpected territory.
