Dancers in the Bay Area's vibrant ballroom scene call it a 'fountain of youth'
"Once I get on the dance floor, it doesn't bother me. Away I go!"
"I hope to be out there at 102."
"I get to circulate,"
"I don't get lonely."
Rick Greene learned ballroom dancing at 19 after his first voyage with the U.S. Merchant Marines, using money left after buying his first car. He mastered swing, rumba and waltz and frequently escorted women to dances featuring big band music. Greene resumed frequent dancing after his wife's 1983 death and now dances three times weekly at venues in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and San Jose, and continues lessons with instructor Robin Horn of 37 years. He cannot perform some dances because of a "gimpy leg" but remains active, social and hopeful of dancing into his early hundreds. The Bay Area ballroom scene remains vibrant, with community, retirement-home and competitive dancers practicing regularly.
