Cher received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys and gave a closing line before beginning to exit the stage. Host Trevor Noah summoned her back to present Record of the Year, and a tape rolled listing nominees before the broadcast returned to Cher holding the winner's envelope. Cher opened the envelope and announced Luther Vandross, who died in 2005, but the actual winner was Kendrick Lamar for "Luther," featuring SZA. Cher immediately corrected herself and called out the proper winner. Lamar laughed, accepted the award, and thanked Vandross during his speech.
