Brent Hinds, 51, died in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn. Police described Hinds as "unresponsive" at the scene. Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 and served as singer-guitarist as the band achieved multiple Billboard Top 10 albums and two No. 1 Rock Album chart entries, including "Emperor of Sand." Mastodon earned six Grammy nominations and won best metal performance in 2017. Hinds left the band in March 2025 by mutual decision amid indications of a rocky relationship. The band expressed heartbreak and gratitude for their shared music and history.
