Brent Hinds, former Mastodon singer-guitarist, died in a motorcycle accident at 51 after another driver failed to yield. The Fulton County medical examiner confirmed the death; an Atlanta police report said a rider on a Harley Davidson was killed in the August 20 collision. Born in Alabama, Hinds moved to Atlanta, joined Troy Sanders' Four Hour Fogger, and helped form Mastodon with Sanders, Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher and Eric Saner in 2000. Hinds' gruff vocals and virtuosic guitar work defined Mastodon's sound across eight studio albums through 2021's Hushed and Grim; early records like Leviathan and Crack the Skye propelled the band's rise.
Following the dissolution of that group, Hinds and Sanders would meet drummer/sing Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher at a basement High on Fire show, with the quartet eventually forming Mastodon with singer Eric Saner in early 2000. Saner stuck through 2001 before exiting the group, which put a new spotlight on Hinds' gruff and forceful vocals, as well as his virtuosic guitar playing - both defining aspects of Mastodon's sound.
Former Mastodon singer-guitarist Brent Hinds has died in a motorcycle accident. He was 51 years old. The Fulton County medical examiner's office confirmed Hinds' death to Atlanta's WANF. An Atlanta police report previously disclosed a male riding a Harley Davidson had been killed in a collision Wednesday night (August 20th) after another driver failed to yield at an intersection. Born in Alabama, Hinds left his hometown for Atlanta to pursue a career in music.
In March of this year, the band announced that it was parting ways with Hinds, wishing him "nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors." Meanwhile, Hinds took a spiteful tone on social media, calling his bandmates "horrible humans" in comments on Instagram. The remaining members of Mastodon did not formally respond to Hinds' comments prior to his passing.
