Billy Strings Turns Tiny Desk Concert Into a Spirited Bluegrass Jam Session
""the way these instruments are meant to sound.""
""We've been lucky to play a lot of cool venues," he said. "But this one's different. It has that same soul to it because - I've seen so many amazing performances that happened right here and I kind of believe that love and spirit kind of soaks into this environment, so just standing here feels like a special thing.""
Billy Strings performed a four-song Tiny Desk set that intentionally evoked earlier, stripped-down performances. He asked for fewer microphones to capture "the way these instruments are meant to sound." The band opened with "Red Daisy" from Renewal, followed by "My Alice" and the instrumental "Malfunction Junction" from Highway Prayers. The ensemble featured Jarrod Walker (mandolin), Alex Hargreaves (fiddle), Billy Failing (banjo), and Royal Masat (bass). Strings closed with "Gild the Lily" and praised Tiny Desk's distinctive soul and history, saying love and spirit soak into the environment. Remaining 2025 US tour dates and a February 2026 run were announced.
