Berkeley Rep's musical about the underground railroad to Mexico is heartfelt and unexpected
Briefly

Mexodus is an emotionally charged, historically based performance that tells the story of the escaped enslaved people who found freedom in Mexico.
Through live-looping technology, the artists create a dynamic music score each night, blending spirituals, Latin rhythms, folk music, and hip-hop.
The narrative follows Henry, a Black man fleeing slavery, and Carlos, a former soldier, highlighting themes of trust, loss, and connection in their journey.
Set against the backdrop of 1837 Mexico's abolition of slavery, Mexodus paints a poignant picture of hope and resilience amid adversity.
