"Like her labelmate Molly Nilsson, Lew excels at wringing maximum emotion from familiar sounds. She deftly moves between sub-genres and styles, from the minimal wave of Distance of the Moon to the New Order-esque Siloed. Recent single Sunday is all widescreen synths and melodramatic drums, like the sun coming up on a new romantic party in California."
"Across all these modes, Lew's earnest vocal tone recalls the light touch of Chromatics' Ruth Radelet—a refreshingly low-key and human centre to her maximalist musical world. A mainstay of the San Francisco Bay Area creative scene, Lew started out playing in indie trio Grass Widow, and went on to form Cold Beat—an electronic group with releases on tastemaking labels Dark Entries and DFA."
Hannah Lew, a Richmond, California-based artist and multidisciplinary creative, releases her self-titled debut album via Night School Records on April 10. The album comprises nine single-worthy tracks saturated with neon-lit heartbreak and melancholic synth-pop sensibilities. Lew, formerly of indie trio Grass Widow and electronic group Cold Beat, demonstrates versatility across sub-genres including minimal wave, New Order-influenced new wave, and dark disco. Her earnest vocal delivery, reminiscent of Chromatics' Ruth Radelet, provides an intimate human element to her maximalist musical arrangements. Tracks like Sunday showcase widescreen synths and melodramatic production, while Another Twilight features dark disco elements with compelling basslines and guitar work.
