UK to test nationwide emergency alert system for second time
Briefly

The UK will test its emergency alert system on 7 September, with mobile phones set to vibrate and sound an alarm for 10 seconds. The system warns of nearby life-threatening dangers and shares vital information. Approximately 87 million mobile phones are in use, but devices turned off or on 2G/3G won't receive alerts. The alert system serves as an important tool for public safety, aiming to help in various emergencies based on past experiences like severe weather and bomb threats.
Emergency alerts have the potential to save lives, allowing us to share essential information rapidly in emergency situations including extreme storms. Just like the fire alarm in your house, it's important we test the system so that we know it will work if we need it.
The alert proved to be an invaluable tool during the Keyham bomb operation. This was the first time the system had been used in a real emergency, and it played a vital role in helping us safely evacuate over 10,000 people and coordinate a complex, multi-agency response.
