The satellite-based communications industry is moving toward commercial deployment, transitioning from pilot phases. 109 telco-satellite partnerships serve 70% of global mobile subscribers. The report identifies increased competition, including Starlink's dominance and Amazon's entry with its Kuiper constellation. In the past quarter, the number of operators with services increased, with 27 live and 82 in testing. The coverage of mobile connections by satellite and non-terrestrial networks is now 66%. Amazon's launch of 27 Kuiper satellites marks a significant development aimed at broadband markets and global logistics coverage.
The report noted that the total number of 109 operators with services was an increase of four players compared with the end of February 2025, with 27 now live and 82 in testing.
Out of a total mobile connections footprint of 5.72 billion, the share of the total connections base covered by satellite and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) was 66%, up two percentage points on February 2025.
GSMA Intelligence believes Amazon's strategic objectives will initially lie in the broadband market, targeting 'not spots' or competing against higher-priced ISPs in rural areas.
The GSMA noted that Amazon's launch of its first 27 out of 3,200 planned Kuiper constellation satellites represented the biggest competitive development of the second quarter of 2025.
