India is likely to ask phone makers to abide by the USB-C standard for charging and data transfer because it will bring down e-waste. The move aims to provide seamless connectivity across devices, reducing headaches for consumers who have to deal with different chargers for smartphones and laptops.
This calls for a USB-C port on nearly all portable devices in the market, harmonizing standards for smartphones, tablets, Windows, Mac devices, and laptops. The immediate impact will be on mobile phones and laptops, but eventually, it will extend to power banks and digital cameras.
The shift is expected to reduce manufacturing costs for companies and buyer expenses. This comes within months of the EU regulator's new rules, which kicked in this year mandating a common mobile charging standard across all smartphone makers.
However, smaller devices like Bluetooth earpieces, fitness bands, and smartwatches do not fall under this purview. Basic phones like feature phones would also be spared from this standard due to their compatibility with universal chargers.
