In 2025, iPhone users face significant challenges in accessing and playing personal music without relying on Apple services or navigating complex limitations. Frustrated by recurring subscription fees and the loss of functionalities upon cancellation, a user decided to create their own music player. This custom-built solution allows for full-text search and iCloud support while emphasizing local-first capabilities. The willingness to learn and adapt highlighted a broader discussion about the need for user independence with technology, especially regarding personal media libraries.
Frustrated with the lack of options, I went the builder route. I wanted to remind myself, this is still a general-purpose computer, I should be able to make it do what I want.
With a curated local library, I didn't lose much, just the lock-in. I thought I'd just keep using iCloud Music Library for cross-device music synchronization but the sync stopped working after canceling Apple Music.
