CMA targets Apple and Google with new rules to open up mobile platforms to competition
Briefly

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has designated Apple and Google as holding "strategic market status" due to their entrenched dominance in mobile markets. This designation aims to foster competition and innovation, as the investigation identified a duopoly over mobile devices. Proposed reforms will focus on app store operations, including developer fees and in-app payment methods. Digital wallets may be opened to competitors, yet more extensive reforms, such as allowing alternative app stores, are postponed until 2026 amidst criticism for not making decisive changes.
The CMA has now set out "roadmaps" to make changes it says are "proportionate, pro-innovation", and in the interest of both UK consumers and businesses.
Apple and Google's mobile platforms are both critical to the UK economy, but our investigation has identified opportunities for more innovation and choice.
