Citi Bike Riders Are Pissed About Eric Adams's 15 MPH Speed Limit - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

Citi Bike users are opposing Mayor Adams's 15 mph e-bike speed limit, feeling it compromises their safety. Jim Burke, a cycling advocate, emphasizes that slower speeds make him less secure, prompting potential reliance on personal electric bikes. Lyft's recent compliance with the new limit comes after several reductions over the years. The increased ride cost per minute also frustrates users, as they experience decreased confidence in emergency situations due to the slower speeds and automatic cut-off features. Users feel trapped by the programmed bike limitations compared to cars, which have more speed flexibility.
"I had a heart attack and a stroke, I'm unable to bike a regular bicycle without having to stop. The Citi Bike electric bikes have been a godsend," Burke told Streetsblog. "I'm probably gonna get an electric bike on my own because I'm not gonna put myself in danger."
"It feels slower, it feels clunkier," said Nirvan Mulchandani, a high school student and Citi Bike member for over a year. "Before, I had confidence that I could move out of the way in an emergency. Now I feel a lot more unconfident - I think that will be unsafe for riders."
