Apple's new hardware chief orders another reshuffle to speed up product development
Tim Cook will be succeeded later this year by John Ternus, Senior VP of Hardware Engineering. Apple also announced a restructuring led by Johny Srouji as Chief Hardware Officer, merging hardware engineering and hardware technologies teams. Srouji began a reshuffle immediately, with Kate Bergeron handing off main product design management to two deputies while overseeing product reliability and continuing responsibility for materials development. Tom Marleb will be succeeded by John Ternus as head of hardware engineering. The reorganization aims for deeper integration between Apple Silicon teams and teams developing individual products to speed development and innovation. Responsibilities for many other staff members will also expand. Product development has been slow in recent years, with examples including AirPower never reaching broad availability.
"Apple is getting a new CEO later this year as Tim Cook will be succeeded by the Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus. But in addition to the news of a new CEO, the company also announced a significant restructuring. Johny Srouji becomes the new Chief Hardware Officer and merges the hardware engineering and hardware technologies teams."
"Almost immediately after taking his new role, Johny Srouji commenced a big reshuffle. Kate Bergeron, for example, will pass on the main product design management to two of her deputies, while she will oversee product reliability. She's taking on the role of Tom Marleb, who in turn succeeds John Ternus as head of the hardware engineering team. Additionally, Bergeron will continue overseeing the development of materials used by Apple."
"Srouji's reorganization is pursuing by deeper integration between the Apple Silicon teams and the teams involved in developing individual products. This is supposed to speed up the process of development and innovation. The reshuffle doesn't stop there, though. Many other staff members are seeing their responsibilities widened."
"Only time will tell how well the new team structure will work, but one thing is for sure: Apple must act now, because product development has been painfully slow at Apple for the last few years. In fact, some products were announced and never saw broad daylight, such as AirPower."
