John Ternus now oversees Apple's hardware and design teams, positioning him as a leading candidate to succeed CEO Tim Cook.
Jackson, technically "vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives," will retire in "late January 2026," Apple says. Newstead, who is currently Meta's chief legal officer, will take over Apple's general counsel role on March 1st, 2026, from Adams, who has been Apple's general counsel since 2017. With Jackson's retirement and Newstead coming on board, Apple is also making some organizational shifts and shifting some responsibilities to Williams' COO replacement, Sabih Khan.
Many of these same people are now hoping that Apple's next CEO will be Apple's current senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus. They see Ternus as a "product guy" like Jobs. Or, probably more accurately, they see Ternus as a "product guy" unlike Cook. But I think that this does Cook a disservice. And for the good of the company, I hope whoever ends up taking the reins is as much like Cook as they are like Jobs.
