In Walnut Creek, a toxic plume from a gas station poses a serious threat to air and soil quality in the community. Steve Depper, owner of a nearby eco-friendly dry cleaning business, has filed a legal complaint against Marathon Petroleum and Tesoro Refining & Marketing, alleging decades of negligence by regional environmental agencies regarding land remediation. His complaint raises concerns about the future viability of planned developments, including the proposed Dutch Girl Plaza project, which aims to include residential and daycare services. Depper is advocating for accountability and action to address the hazardous contamination.
I'm very cautious about exposing my employees obviously that's why I'm all green, Depper said in an interview Friday.
Rather than coming up with a new engineering solution, which I understand is readily available, (Marathon and Tesoro) decided to just leave that big mound of highly contaminated soil in place and cover it up.
Despite listing 16 separate claims against various subsidiaries, Depper's complaint has one main request for the petroleum corporations uphold statutory, contractual agreements to retain responsibility for remediation.
