San Jose starts clearing homeless camp known as 'the Jungle' - San Jose Spotlight
""This isn't a sweep, it's an eviction," Jim Taylor, a 29-year-old resident who lives in the encampment, told San José Spotlight. "I feel directionless. I don't feel much right now, I feel numb to the entire situation.""
""We have gone through a process working collaboratively across the departments, but especially between (the Housing Department) and Parks and Recreation, to clear out our largest encampments throughout the city," Soliván said at a Wednesday news conference."
San Jose has initiated the dismantling of its last significant homeless encampment, known as 'the Jungle,' after extensive outreach efforts. Over 100 homeless individuals resided there, with some moving to temporary housing while others reported receiving no housing offers. City officials estimate the clearing process will take about a month, after which the area will be designated a no encampment zone. More than 30 individuals have already transitioned to shelters, with plans for additional placements as outreach continues.
