The newly opened safe parking site at 1300 Berryessa Road in San Jose provides 86 spaces for homeless people living in their vehicles, offering security and access to essential services. Operated by nonprofit WeHope, it has already enabled two individuals to secure permanent housing since its opening. The site offers amenities like food, sanitation, and various classes aimed at improving life skills. Residents now focus on job searching without fear of enforcement actions such as towing, contributing positively to their transition towards stability.
"This is a great start, and the impact has already been very relevant to people's lives," WeHope founder Paul Bains told San Jose Spotlight.
Frank Pacheco, 57, moved to the site a couple weeks ago. He said he can already feel the difference it has made.
