San Jose has launched its first interim housing site, opened on land leased for just a dollar a year thanks to John Sobrato. The Via Del Oro site now has 135 tiny homes, part of a larger initiative to create 1,000 new spots this year to address homelessness in the city. With half the beds already occupied, Mayor Matt Mahan envisions this project as a model for ending street homelessness, providing essential services and a transformative opportunity for residents, including those like Zachary Plumeau, who found renewed motivation for stability.
"This site is more than just 150 beds; this is a life-saving, transformative opportunity," said Mayor Matt Mahan, emphasizing the site’s potential impact on homelessness.
Plumeau mentioned the tiny homes' impact, saying, "If you care about yourself and you want to better yourself...if you're homeless, this is the place to go."
