The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is attempting to close the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge bike path to create an additional car lane, sparking public outcry. Key meetings on this topic have been cancelled without explanation, leading to suspicions about transparency. After a public records request, it was revealed that MTC is pushing for the bike path to be converted into a breakdown shoulder despite a long-standing history of the trail being open. Thousands of community members have protested, resulting in temporary delays, but frustration remains regarding the handling of the process by MTC and Caltrans.
A few months ago we raised alarm bells about an impending vote by the Bay Conversation and Development Commission (BCDC) to determine whether the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Trail would stay open 24/7 or be converted into a breakdown shoulder for cars.
Despite this condition already existing for more than 40 years prior to the trail opening in 2019, MTC was trying to make a case that they needed to study the impact of having a breakdown shoulder available.
