Oakland Ballet journeys to 'Angel Island' for Dancing Moons Fest

The Oakland Ballet's fourth annual Dancing Moons Festival will feature the world premiere of 'The Angel Island Project' on May 4. This performance, supported musically by the Del Sol String Quartet and the vocal ensemble Volti, centers on the poignant history of Angel Island, which served as a processing station for immigrants, particularly Chinese and other Asians, from 1910 to 1940. The oratorio, composed by Huang Ruo, draws on poems inscribed in the Angel Island detention center, reflecting the emotional landscapes of hopes, dreams, and despair faced by immigrants.
The poems carved into the walls of the detention center on Angel Island seemed like the perfect vehicle to explore the Chinese immigrant experience.
Every language has a style and it's actually not that easy to capture the nuance of that language well, especially when setting it to music.
