Tenants of the Thomas Paine Square Apartments, organized by Pat Cochran, met to strategize about improving their dire living conditions, including mold and asbestos issues. Despite living near their landlord, Bethel AME Church, they feel neglected and are trying to gather more information on the church's Board of Directors. They are pushing for a response to their May 2023 demand for asbestos testing. Communication with the board remains limited, with representatives noting they are not authorized to respond to tenants' concerns.
"We were under the radar for so long, people were getting evicted and everything," said Pat Cochran, an organizer for the tenants at Thomas Paine Square Apartments.
"What do we do next?" Cochran asked the four tenants who attended the meeting.
Tenants say there is so little they know about their landlord or the seven-member Board of Directors that oversees the complex.
"This is a board of directors' matter, and at this time, I have not been authorized to respond to any outside concerns," Sisk wrote in an email.
