Mission residents face a question: More affordable housing or sunlight for kids?
Briefly

Residents of the Mission District are deliberating whether to reduce a planned 388-unit affordable housing project by 10 units to prevent blocking sunlight at a nearby school. This proposal, introduced due to concerns from parents about sunlight blocking at Marshall Elementary's playground, emphasizes the difficult balance between offering affordable housing and ensuring children's well-being. Community feedback will guide the decision over multiple meetings, reflecting broader tensions in urban development and local environmental concerns.
"We recognized the effect of the shadows over Marshall's playground. We know this is important for parents and teachers," said Dairo Romero, community planning manager at MEDA.
"There's always pushback. This is why we have the housing crisis that we have," said Sen. Scott Wiener on Friday morning, adding that while he understands the concerns coming from part of the community, the priority should be housing families.
"[The project] is right next to BART and in the heart of the Mission," he said. "This is where we should be maximizing."
