The Marin County Board of Supervisors is set to vote on March 11 regarding the declaration of a three-year shelter crisis. This designation aims to enhance emergency shelter options, thereby facilitating quicker deployment of temporary housing solutions like cabins and RVs in unincorporated areas. Approval would alleviate existing zoning and permitting restrictions, and necessitate adjustments to local building codes, which currently complicate the establishment of temporary shelters. Despite the urgency, no funding is attached to the proposal, highlighting the need for creative solutions to the homelessness issue.
"This shelter crisis designation provides us with one more tool to help those living on the street or in a vehicle," said Gary Naja-Riese, director of the County's Homelessness and Coordinated Care division.
If approved, the designation would ease zoning and permitting restrictions for shelters on county-owned property, allowing for faster deployment of temporary housing solutions.
