Leland High robotics team heads to world championships

Leland High School's robotics team, Quixilver 604, is set to compete in the FIRST World Championship in Houston after demonstrating exceptional performance in regional competitions. Over eight weeks, they developed a 115-lb robot for this year’s themed competition, 'Reefscape,' and secured an impressive 15-2-0 record. They also received the Innovation in Control Award for their advancements in robotics control systems. Founded 25 years ago by Helen Arrington, Quixilver continues to thrive under her mentorship, as she has recently gained recognition for her contributions to education.
In the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, high school teams design, build and program robots to compete in a themed game that changes each year.
The Leland team was started 25 years ago by Helen Arrington, who is still Quixilver's head mentor and was recently named the 2025 secondary teacher of the year.
